Brian is overwhelmed by the birth of his son.  When he was young, Debbie had convinced him to keep a journal of his feelings in order to keep his anger at his family under control.  It helped him then so he decides to start keeping a journal again of his feelings about his boy in the hopes he can work them out in his own head.  Brian hasn't a clue as to what the journal will end up being about as he includes a certain young blond in his very first entry.
